My smoke alarm is beeping. What does that mean?
A smoke alarm will beep or “chirp” once every minute or so when the batteries are low. Although your smoke alarm may be wired into your home’s electrical system, it may still have a battery back-up in case of a power failure. Your smoke alarm should be checked monthly and your alkaline batteries changed once a year. Your smoke alarms may be hard wired, if this is the case, once one alarm goes off, they all may go off.
If your alarm(s) is chirping, you should try replacing the batteries. If it continues to chirp, try vacuuming each device as dust and humidity could also activate them.
Your smoke alarm should be replaced every about 8 - 10 years. Like most electrical devices, smoke alarms wear out. Smoke alarms are easy to take care of - simply replace batteries at least once a year and keep them clean by vacuuming over and around your smoke alarm regularly.
For assistance with your alarms, you can call a licensed handyman or electrician.
