Water Conservation

Seasonal Tips:  April through July

Water Awareness Month logo

April is Water Awareness Month -

Counting on You to Do Your Part!

April:  Showers!

Take shorter showers to save water and energy as well as money. Dermatologists report that five-minute showers are better for your skin. Showering longer depletes your skin of natural oils. If everyone in Goodyear shortened their daily showers by one minute we would save more than 35.5 million gallons of water per year.

Try using a shutoff valve while you lather up. This will hold the temperature and save Goodyear another 35.5 million gallons for every time you turn the water off!

Try the newer non-aerating showerheads that deliver water savings and comfort.

May:  Plug that Leak!

A sink leaking only a tablespoon of water a minute can waste almost 6 gallons a day. That becomes 6,000 gallons of water a year!

Leaky toilets are harder to notice. Place a few drops of food coloring in your tank. If it leaks into the bowl, then you have a leak.

Leaks outside your home can waste even more water, so check your drip system monthly.

Fix leaky faucets and toilets

June:  Beat the Peak. It's a Dry Heat!

The temperature is rising and the humidity is going down. Outdoor plants may need more water, but don't over-water. Native plants on desert slopes all around us survive without watering between rains.

Deeply water plants so water reaches the deeper roots under the plant's canopy. Short frequent waterings don't reach all the roots. Water deeply, not often.

Don't overwater desert plants

July:  Beat the Peak. Turn that Hose Off!

When not in use, turn off your hose. This includes while washing cars or watering plants. Buy an automatic shut-off valve for your hose at a garden or home store.

Get out the broom and sweep walks and driveways rather than spraying with water.

Keep a gallon of water in the refrigerator handy instead of running tap water repeatedly.

How much water are you losing for each leak?
